Website: Go.HRW.com - German

GO.HRW.COM: German is a website by the textbook publisher Holt, Rinehart and Winston to supplement their high school-level German textbook series called Komm mit! (Level 1 book on Amazon.com here - but you don't need the textbooks to use the site). The site offers interactive grammar, vocabulary and culture exercises.

(Note: make sure your web browser is enabled to display frames, or the pages won't display correctly. If you have an IE browser and are having problems, try this.)

The German pages on the site are divided into three levels: Komm mit! Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. When you click on a level, you are given a list of city names and chapters. The city names in the list are activities based on Internet searches; the aim is to help you learn more about that city and its culture. For example, when you click on Level 1 - Brandenburg, there is a worksheet and a list of links to help students discover some interesting places in Brandenburg.

The interactive vocabulary, grammar and culture exercises can be reached by clicking on one of the chapter links. Each chapter has about nine interactive exercises, and also has another Internet search activity. The exercises are in a variety of formats: some of the exercises are drag-and-drop using a word bank, some are fill-in-the-blank, and some are multiple choice. (It would be nice if some of the pictures in the drag-and-drop exercises were a little bit bigger.) Each chapter also has a self-test of the material covered.

This site is good for reviewing grammar that you have already learned elsewhere, since the site doesn't have any lessons that teach any material (it just has the interactive exercises). But the site still offers an interactive way to practice German grammar, and maybe learn some new vocabulary and facts about Germany. (The site will  no longer be updated by the publishers, but it seems that they are leaving up these exercise pages.)
